Marine Industry

Our innovative sealing solutions are used in a range of marine-based applications specifically tailored to provide high sealing efficiency for systems operating in the most inhospitable environments in the world. From offshore oil drilling platforms and crude oil tankers to LNG carriers, Durlon® offers a diverse and highly specialized selection of sealing solutions meeting the ABS and DNV-GL certifications and specifically designed to increase safety and reduce downtime.

Sealing challenges go beyond the practical issue of gasket installation; they must be capable of withstanding extreme environmental conditions because failure can be both devastating to the environment and costly to repair. We understand the demands of these unique conditions and have developed a range of products specifically for marine-based applications.

Our semi-metallic spiral wound gaskets (SWG) are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes. They can be fabricated of any metal or exotic alloy we offer; therefore, they can be used against virtually any corrosive medium dependent upon the choice of metal and filler. Many marine applications deal with chemically aggressive media and our vast inventory of exotic alloys helps us to accommodate those applications. Durlon® SWG has achieved API Standard 6FB Fire Test certification and all of our D, DR, and DRI styles are TA-Luft certified.

For a corrosion-resistant gasket, we recommend our Durlon® 9200. It’s our most chemically resistant filled-PTFE product and approved material for Pamphlet 95, the chlorine institute, DNV-GL, as well as ABS-PDA which means it is certified to the highest standards of the American Bureau of Shipping for rigorous marine requirements. Durlon® 9200 has also passed the BAM oxygen service: gaseous & liquid test, making it a great choice for marine applications where oxygen service is involved.

Extreme gasket performance flexibility is proven with Durlon® 9002 as a product often used in LNG and cryogenic applications. This readily available PTFE gasket material features a versatile and reliable seal with a higher bolt torque retention that does not exhibit cold-flow problems. Durlon® 9002 has passed the gaseous oxygen test up to 260°C (500°F) at 52 bar (754 psi) as well as for liquid oxygen service using BAM standards and LOX Mechanical Impact Sensitivity (ASTM G86 & ISO 21010), passing with zero reactions out of twenty tests (0/20) at a test reaction frequency of 0%.

Another ideal sealing product used in marine-based applications from stationary oil drilling platforms to military ships is our Durlon® 8500. This high-performance compressed gasket material is NATO-specced for HVAC and refrigerant applications for military ships and has passed the API 6FB Fire Test under an avg. temp >650°C, 30 mins burn period, 40 bar test pressure, with only a 0.05 ml/(inch. min) leak rate.

Durlon® HT1000® consists of phlogopite mica paper impregnated with an inorganic binder at less than half the binder amount found in vermiculite-phyllosilicate filled products. This lower binder content allows for superior weight retention, less than 4% weight loss at 800°C (1,472°F), and results in ultimate extreme temperature sealing performance up to 1,000°C (1,832°F).

The Durlon® HT1000® characteristics allow for it to be used as a sealing material on its own or combined with various carrier media in heat exchangers, exhaust manifolds, and other equipment commonly found in the refinery, power generation, and chemical industries.

Phlogopite mica is a non-toxic naturally occurring hydrated silicate of potassium and magnesium with a lamellar and non-fibrous structure. It is flexible, has high tensile strength, can withstand substantial mechanical pressure perpendicular to the lamellar plane, is chemically resistant, fireproof, infusible, incombustible, non-flammable, and is a known alternative to asbestos.
